Book review: Caroline Elkins, Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain’s Gulag in Kenya. Which means that it's a catalogue of beating, torture, rape, starvation, slave labor, disease, arbitrary execution, and a kind of barbarous cruelty that makes the British claim that they were defending civilization against Mau Mau savagery a kind of sick joke (and one that rapidly gets old), all bathed in a toxic racism. The Mau Mau rebellion is normally presented as a brutal and savage perpetrated by the Kikuyu. I actually had to keep putting it down for awhile because it is so intense. Britain fought in the Second World War to save the world from fascism. It goes to show that what we were fed in the news media at the time was mostly rubbish. The detail of the official actions of the government are well laid out. Everyone should read this gripping book. You can still see all customer reviews for the product. Review by: John McClatchie. Well researched and devastating account of Britain's policy to isolate people to suppress the Mau Mau rebellion, and how that policy led to a system of torture, extrajudicial murder, and human rights violations for those caught up - and the lack of any sanction against the perpetrators. Could be dry for those not interested in History. This book is about the colonial reign of the British in Kenya. Kenya in the "Emergency" of the Mau-Mau rebellion by the Kikuyu people filled the 1950s up to the early 1960s British decision to relinquish "colonial" control and allow independence. it was what many Germans said when confronted by Nazi death camps after World War II. The British ultimately “detained some 1.5 million people, or nearly the entire Kikuyu population” in a brutal fashion reminiscent of “an astonishing portrait of destruction” in an effort to suppress the anti-imperialist Mau Mau revolt. Let me just say that this is a depressing and compelling book. My worry is it seems most Kenyans, like most British, somehow have forgotten (as we have of American-Japanese internment and "ethnic cleansing" of native Americans) these atrocities that became so easy for too many to commit. Imperial Reckoning is the winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction. Elkins covers the background to the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, the deliberations on how to respond to it by the colonial leadership in Nairobi and the British government, and the resulting protests and calls for inquiries by missionaries, journalists, and Labor MPs, but a good half or more of the book details day-to-day life as it was experienced by practically all Kikuyu, with the exception of a small cadre of loyalists (and the actual forest guerrillas, though once captured they mostly went to the same camps), during the Kenyan Emergency.
